Jinhua Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JHAAS) was founded in 1958. In December 2019, following an institutional restructuring, it merged with the Zhejiang Academy of Agricultural Machinery. JHAAS is principally engaged in the introduction, breeding, and development of new crop, livestock, and aquaculture varieties, along with supporting technologies. It also undertakes research and promotion of agricultural machinery and equipment, quality inspection of agricultural machinery products, as well as agricultural science and technology consulting services, covering the full spectrum of agronomy and agricultural engineering research. The Academy comprises 11 specialized research institutes (centers), 3 administrative departments, and 1 affiliated enterprise. It currently employs 122 staff members, including 12 with senior professional titles and 30 with associate senior titles, alongside 57 doctoral and master’s degree holders. Among them are 2 experts enjoying the State Council special allowance, 1 expert of the National Agricultural Technology System, 1 Zhejiang Provincial Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Expert, 1 Provincial Agricultural Science and Technology Contributor, 5 provincial academic and technological leaders, 5 members of the provincial “151 Talent Program”, 4 recipients of the “Zhejiang Agricultural Talent” title, 7 municipal top talents, and 24 members of the municipal “321 Talent Program.”JHAAS manages the Jinhua National Agricultural Science and Technology Park and operates over 3,000 mu (200 hectares) of experimental bases, including the Central Zhejiang Modern Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Center Base, Jinhua Modern Agricultural Research Base, Modern Agricultural Machinery Innovation and Experiment Base, and the Lingshui (Hainan) Southern Breeding Base. The Academy hosts 27 national, provincial, and municipal innovation service platforms, such as the “Shuanglong Laboratory”, the National Crop Regional Test Station, the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory for Breeding and Cultivation of Characteristic Aquatic Vegetables, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Yangtze River Delta (Jinhua) Modern Science and Technology Center, the Zhejiang Provincial Postdoctoral Research Station, and the China-Africa (Jinhua) Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Park. In addition, it has established 12 service branches, including the Jindong Flower and Seedling Research Institute and branch institutes in Pan’an, Lanxi, and Wensu. For decades, JHAAS has adhered to the guiding principle of “focusing research on industry needs, strengthening services through innovation platforms, and striving for excellence”. It has pursued a distinctive development pathway of “integrating improved varieties and advanced practices, combining agricultural machinery and agronomy, and balancing research with service”, providing robust scientific and technological support for agricultural and rural modernization in Jinhua and surrounding regions.Since the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan, JHAAS has undertaken more than 180 national, provincial, and municipal research projects, winning over 50 awards at the provincialministerial and municipaldepartmental levels. Notably, the achievement titled “Development and Application of Key Technologies and Equipment for Factory-based Edible Mushroom Production” won the Second Prize of Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award in 2024. The Academy has also registered or certified 45 new varieties of rice, dryland crops, and vegetables; developed 60 sets of agricultural machinery and equipment; obtained more than 100 national invention patents; published 13 academic monographs; formulated or revised over 50 technical standards, including 2 national and industry standards; and published more than 160 academic papers, including 48 indexed by SCIEI.Looking ahead, JHAAS will align itself with the national goal of building a strong agricultural sector, seize policy opportunities for prioritizing agricultural and rural development, and focus on the upgrading needs of Jinhua’s agricultural industry. Leveraging the establishment of the “Shuanglong Laboratory”—the first comprehensive municipal-level agricultural laboratory in Zhejiang Province—as a major opportunity, the Academy will comprehensively strengthen research infrastructure and talent development, enhance technological innovation and scientific services, and strive to build a national first-class municipal agricultural academy. At the same time, JHAAS will deepen the integration of innovation and industrial chains, advance rural industrial revitalization, and contribute to narrowing the “three major gaps” and achieving common prosperity.
