Want to post a news? Founded in 1957, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is China’s national comprehensive agricultural research institution. It is the country’s highest academic institution for comprehensive agricultural sciences, a strategic advisory institution on agriculture and agricultural science and technology, and a core national S&T force serving agriculture, rural areas, and farmers. CAAS undertakes basic and applied basic research, applied research, and high-tech research to address major public-interest, foundational, systemic, strategic, and forward-looking S&T challenges in China’s agricultural and rural development. Organized by research institutes and implemented through research teams, CAAS has built an integrated, chain-type innovation layout that advances strong core disciplines alongside cross-disciplinary and emerging fields, linking theoretical innovation and applied basic research; key technology research and the incubation of research outputs; and the transfer, scaling, and demonstration of innovations. It has established a three-tier disciplinary system comprising 11 major disciplinary clusters—Agricultural Basic and Frontier Research; Crop Science; Horticulture; Plant Protection; Agricultural Resources and Environment; Animal Science; Veterinary Medicine; Agricultural Microbiology; Agro-product Quality and Processing; Agricultural Equipment, Engineering and Information; and Agricultural Economics and Rural Development—covering 58 discipline and 283 research directions.Aligned to the functions of innovation, support, and service, CAAS has established a comprehensive three-level (national, ministerial/provincial, and academy) S&T platform system totaling 550 platforms. It hosts the world’s largest single-facility large-animal BSL-4 laboratory and Asia’s largest large-animal BSL-3 laboratory cluster; operates 2 national major S&T infrastructures; 15 State Key Laboratories; 1 National Center for Technology Innovation; 5 National Engineering Research Centers; and 7 national engineering laboratories/centers. CAAS maintains 12 national crop germplasm banks and 13 national crop germplasm nurseries, with more than 530,000 accessions under long-term conservation—the world’s second-largest collection. In 2021, CAAS completed the world’s largest single-site National Crop Gene Bank by original resources. The National Agricultural Library ranks first in Asia and third worldwide for agricultural collections.CAAS collaborates with 330+ foreign government bodies and research/education institutions, and with nearly 50 international organizations, foundations, and multinational companies. Ten international organizations maintain resident representative offices at CAAS. Together with multilateral and bilateral partners, CAAS has co-built 120+ international cooperation platforms, including nine FAO/World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)-designated international reference laboratories. It has been approved for four national-level Belt and Road laboratories. CAAS launched the International Science & Technology Innovation Program (CAASTIP) and leads the G2P (From Genome to Phenome - Deciphering Crop Genetic Resources) International Mega Science Project, with average annual external cooperation funding of roughly RMB 100 million. It has hosted seven consecutive editions of the International High-Level Seminar for Presidents of Agricultural Academies and organizes around 60 high-level international academic conferences each year. CAAS continues to deepen cooperation with global food and agriculture institutions, supports agricultural S&T cooperation under mechanisms such as the G20, APEC, and BRICS, and is deeply involved in the formulation and revision of international conventions and standards.CAAS is advancing Belt and Road agricultural S&T cooperation, leads the national Agricultural S&T Going Global Alliance, and has facilitated the international deployment of 60+ technologies and products. Together with African partners, CAAS co-initiated and launched the China–Africa Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (CAASTIA) to serve the broader China–Africa cooperation agenda; it has also built a cross-border agricultural S&T cooperation architecture along China’s borders and deepened agricultural S&T diplomacy with neighboring countries. More than 400 CAAS experts hold senior roles in international organizations and on international journal boards. CAAS has received 22 visiting heads of state and has become a regular destination for high-level delegations. Each year, it dispatches over 1,500 personnel for international exchanges and hosts approximately 1,200 foreign experts.
