The Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences is a public institution directly under the Guangdong Provincial People's Government. It was established in 1960, originating from the rice research station founded by the renowned agronomist Professor Ding Ying at Sun Yat-sen University in 1930 and the South China Agricultural Science Research Institute established in 1956. The academy covers an area of over 5,800 acres, with a research demonstration base area of 4,200 acres.Currently, there are 15 research institutions including those focused on rice, fruit trees, vegetables, crops, plant protection, agricultural quality standards and monitoring technology, facility agriculture, animal science (aquaculture), sericulture and agricultural product processing, agricultural resources and environment, animal health, agricultural economics and information, tea, and environmental horticulture, as well as an Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center. It has set up postdoctoral research stations. Three disciplines—"Agricultural Science," "Botany and Zoology," and "Environmental and Ecological Science"—are ranked in the top 1% globally by ESI.The current staff includes 1,179 employees, among which there are 653 senior title experts and 651 individuals with doctoral degrees. The institution has 4 national key innovative talent plan leaders, 2 national candidates for the "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talent Project," 9 talents under the National Shennong Talent Plan, 14 experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council, and 23 experts from the National Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System.It leads the establishment of the National Key Laboratory for Pig and Poultry Breeding and has built several national and provincial collaborative platforms including the National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base for Agricultural Product Processing, the National-Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Tropical and Subtropical Fruit and Vegetable Processing, and multiple national germplasm resource nurseries located in Guangzhou for wild rice, sweet potatoes, lychees, bananas, mulberries, and tea trees. Additionally, it operates various national-level research platforms, totaling 15, along with 94 departmental and provincial research platforms, and has collected and preserved over 63,000 crop germplasm resources.
