Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HUNAAS) is a comprehensive agricultural research institution directly administered by the People’s Government of Hunan Province. It encompasses 15 specialized research institutes covering the areas of rice, tea, horticulture, vegetables, crops, agricultural equipment, plant protection, microbiology, animal husbandry, agricultural products processing, cultivated land, aquaculture, cotton and sericulture, agricultural economics and information, nuclear agriculture, and traditional Chinese medicine. HUNAAS currently boasts a dedicated team of 1,621 scientific researchers and has independently cultivated four academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: Yuan Longping, Zou Xuexiao, Shan Yang, and Bai Lianyang.HUNAAS has established 91 national and provincialministerial level innovation platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Hybrid Rice, the National Center of Technology Innovation for Saline-Alkali Tolerant Rice, and the China-Madagascar "Belt and Road" Joint Laboratory on Hybrid Rice. Its research bases span an area of 9,870.2 mu (approximately 658 hm2).HUNAAS has accumulated 2,170 scientific research achievements and 620 national and provincialministerial level awards. Notably, its groundbreaking research in hybrid rice has been recognized with China's sole Special Prize of the State Technological Invention Award, the First State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, and the 2013 Special Prize for State Science and Technology Progress Award. Following three significant theoretical innovations and six rounds of yield enhancement, the single-season yield reached an impressive 1,251.5 kgmu in 2023. Furthermore, HUNAAS maintains a leading position in China in research fields such as pepper breeding, biological green prevention and control, intensive processing of citrus, and hybrid rapeseed.
