Founded in 1954, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) is affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China. It serves as the nation's premier comprehensive academic institution for tropical agricultural scientific research, a strategic advisory body on tropical agriculture and its related science and technology, and a national strategic scientific and technological force in the field of tropical agriculture.The Academy comprises 14 subordinate research institutions, covering 69,900 mu (approximately 4,660 hectares) of research land and employing over 3,000 staff members. It boasts 146 national, ministerial, and provincial-level sci-tech innovation platforms, 12 innovation platforms led by academicians, and 5 postdoctoral research workstations. CATAS has secured 51 national-level sci-tech awards (including the First Prize of National Invention Awards and the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Awards) as well as more than 1,000 sci-tech achievements at or above the provincialministerial level. It has bred over 400 superior new varieties, obtained more than 3,500 authorized patents, formulatedrevised over 500 national and agricultural industry standards, and developed more than 300 sci-tech products—making pivotal contributions to the development of China's tropical agriculture.CATAS has established long-term and stable cooperative relationships with 16 international organizations and researcheducational institutions from over 50 countries and regions. It has undertaken 649 international cooperation projects, won 25 international cooperation awards, and set up 10 international joint laboratoriesresearch centers for tropical agricultural science and technology, along with 13 overseas agricultural experimental stations. The Academy has organized or hosted over 100 technical training courses, benefiting more than 7,000 participants from 105 countries across Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Latin America.Recognized as the "FAO Reference Centre for Research and Training in Tropical Agriculture", the "Joint Centre for Sino-African Modern Agricultural Technology Exchange, Demonstration and Training" (jointly designated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), and a "National International Science and Technology Cooperation Base" (approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology), CATAS stands as the leading force in China's international scientific and technological cooperation in tropical agriculture.
