• Light grazing reduced soil erosion (E) and respiration (Rs) in grasslands. • Increased soil BD and reduced plant biomass alter E and Rs with light grazing. • Light grazing has potential to increase soil carbon stocks in grassland ecosystems. • Dual goals of ecological and economic gains could be achieved in China. • Further studies should be carried out in more area of the Loess Plateau.
